Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, is one of Africa’s cleanest, safest, and most organized cities. For Americans looking to relocate, Kigali offers an affordable cost of living, an English-speaking population, and a welcoming atmosphere.
Affordability and Cost of Living
Kigali is more affordable than most U.S. cities, though prices vary by neighborhood. Renting a furnished apartment in upscale areas like Nyarutarama or Kimihurura costs between $500 and $1,500 per month. Eating out is cheap, with local restaurants serving meals for $3 to $10. Groceries and fresh produce are super affordable, with local markets offering fresh fruits, vegetables, and meats at low costs.
Safety and Security
Kigali is one of the safest cities in Africa, with low crime rates and a strong police presence. Violent crime is rare, and the city is known for its political stability. Probably some of the cleanest streets of any city I’ve ever seen too.

English as the Official Language
English is widely spoken in Kigali, especially among younger generations and in business settings. Rwanda actually transitioned from French to English as its primary language of instruction. Rather interesting choice, but English is the Lingua Franca.
Quality of Life and American Similarities

Kigali offers all the modern amenities, including shopping centers like Kigali Heights and Union Trade Center, featuring supermarkets, international brands, and entertainment options. The city has a strong café culture, excellent road infrastructure, and efficient public services. It’s well-organized and expat-friendly.
Driving is on the right side of the road, similar to the U.S. However, public transport is limited, and many expats rely on ride-hailing services like Yego Moto or car rentals for mobility.
Healthcare and Medical Facilities
Kigali has high-quality private hospitals that cater to expats. Institutions like King Faisal Hospital and Legacy Clinics provide international-standard medical care, though for specialized treatments, many expats travel to Nairobi or South Africa. Having comprehensive health insurance is advisable.

Final Thoughts
Affordability, safety, and an English-speaking environment. What more could you want? Kigali is a perfect destination for Americans seeking a fresh start.
